Connecting NSW wine makers with international buyers

This virtual wine directory developed for the NSW Government links export-ready NSW wineries with overseas importers, distributors and retailers

The challenge

Symbiote was engaged by Investment NSW to develop the NSW Wine Exporter Directory – a virtual wine directory that profiles export-ready NSW wineries, showcases the state’s wines to international markets, and directly links producers with selected overseas importers, distributors and retailers.

The client wanted to continue using Silverstripe, so they could administer the new site themselves in the same way they do with their existing sites.

The site needed to:

  • Contain a directory that identifies, profiles and promotes NSW Wines that are ready to export within the key markets

  • Promote the wineries to targeted trade-only players in key export markets

  • Promote NSW as a wine producing region that can readily supply wines to global markets and drive international recognition of NSW wines

  • Target a limited, wholesale (B2B) market:

    • Primary: Importers, distributors and retailers of wines in international markets

    • Secondary: NSW Wine producers

Webpage for the NSW Wine Exporter Directory, includes a map of NSW winegrowing regions with a legend identifying the regions, as well as links for wineries to create and update their profiles and for buyers to register.

What we did

We have a 15 year-long relationship with this client, and extensive knowledge of their Silverstripe environment, which enabled a rapid-turnaround development of this new site.

Technical requirements:

  • Fully outbound site (no form ingestion), that promotes producers and products

  • Host approximately 30-60 supplier Profiles in the directory (no limit on the number of profiles is imposed)

  • Invitation-only, secure access

  • Suppliers have the ability to manage their own profile and profiles of their products

  • Administrators can view, interact with and manage all suppliers and products

  • Estimated volume of traffic is low – proposed system is designed for growth

  • Hosting and application support covered under existing hosting agreements.

Image 2 below shows the steps involved in the production of the new NSW Wine Exporter Directory:

  • Hosting and site setup, including creation of the Silverstripe site and implementation of provided designs

  • Build: continued implementation of designs, creation of user types and content types, testing and QA

  • Go-live preparations: content migration

  • Launch
